Dante Medina
Pianist, composer. Born in Argentina, Dante Medina began his piano studies at an
early age. A graduate or the University of Córdoba, he later earned a master’s degree
at Indiana University after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship. Among his teachers were
Abbey Simon and Gyorgy Sebok.
As a pianist Mr Medina has concertized extensively in Argentina, elsewhere in South
America, Mexico, and the United States, and he has performed with most of the
leading orchestras in Argentina as well as with the Tubingen Chamber Orchestra and
the Indiana University Concert Orchestra.
Mr Medina’s versatility as a performer is reflected in his work as a composer. He has
written for piano and both chamber and symphonic groups, with his compositions
abounding in references to Latin, jazz, tango and exotic rhythms, imparting a
characteristic flavor to his music.
Some of his works appear on the Compact Disc “Tangos con Gracia” and, more
recently, in “Pianotimes”; both CDs have been issued by the Municipality of Córdoba,
Argentina. In 1999 the artist performed the entire cycle of 32 Sonatas by L. van
Beethoven, at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and has also interpreted all of
Beethoven’s Sonatas for violin and piano.
As a professor Mr Medina holds posts at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in both
teaching and research, and he was formerly the Director of the Escuela de Artes of
the University. In a busy academic schedule Mr Medina frequently teaches, performs
and lectures at American Universities, including Emory University of Atlanta, The
University of the South, Tennessee, and others.
Presently his compositions are being presented in international stages: the
Symphonic Band of Sao Paulo (Brazil) , the Basel Klaviertrio (Switzerland). In addition
Mr Medina maintains an intensive agenda of concert engagements with classical and
contemporary repertory and works of his own production.
